Storing Guns in Safe Gun Cabinets

By:

If you are a gun enthusiast, you probably are already familiar with the importance of keeping guns safe in gun cabinets. If not, here is some good information that you can use to prevent improper handling of your guns and keep them safe.

The first thing that must be said is that gun owners are always held responsible for how their guns are handled. For this reason alone, it is recommended that every gun owner place their firearms in gun cabinets that will deter anyone with nefarious motives. You would not want to have someone with malicious intent steal your guns and then find out later that one of them was used to take another persons life.

Gun cabinets are good alternatives to gun safes because as a rule they are less expensive. They also offer the opportunity to add a good looking piece of furniture to the home or office. This type of security cabinet may not be as secure as a gun safe, but they certainly go a long way when it comes to preventing young children from getting their hands on the guns that are stored inside.

Some gun cabinets are elaborate and can be bolted to the floor or wall to prevent them from being carted off by thieves who have a hard time getting past the lock. A gun that is locked up securely behind the doors of a quality gun cabinet is also beneficial in helping to cool down hot heads. When the owner has to unlock the doors of gun cabinets, and then place the firing pin in place as well as getting their hands on the ammunition that should be stored behind separate locked doors, a hasty decision is put off and time to think may deter wrong headed actions.

With so much emphasis these days being placed on gun control, it just makes sense that the owners of guns should place their firearms behind secure and locked gun cabinets. When this is routinely done, there is less likelihood of unauthorized individuals getting their hands on guns and wreaking havoc on the lives of others.

When you are ready to select your first or additional gun cabinets, there are a few things you should consider. The material you choose may be entirely based on your budget, but steel and wood make great solid and tamper resistant gun cabinets for most applications. While you may be attracted to the wooden ones with glass doors, this may not be the right way to go if you are going to deter theft since glass breaks easily. Even determined children are not immune to cracking open a door to get to what they may consider the next great toy.

The space you have may be limited so make sure that whichever style you choose will fit into that space. You will also want to have a quality lock to keep your guns safe. It is estimated that 90% of all burglaries that take place in homes only last for about 5 minutes. A good lock that is not easy to pick will prevent most thieves from taking your guns. A combination or electronic lock is the best choice for this application.

Having your guns confined behind the doors of good gun cabinets is not the end of your responsibility but it is a great start. Make sure that you understand how to store them properly and safe gun handling practices when you do remove them from their safe place.
