If you are planning on purchasing a firearm you need to understand that you also have to purchase a gun safe. This is not something that you can debate or put off until a later date. After all gun safes are not merely in existence so as to provide safety. In fact many countries have made it a law that if you own a firearm it must be housed in a secure gun safe.
You can find many excellent gun safes on the market these days and available in a wide range of designs. The majority of these safes are suitable for protecting your guns as well as protecting curious young children. Unfortunately while the gun safe will prevent your child from gaining access to the weapon it is important to understand that no safe can protect your guns from falling into the hands of criminals. Many of today's criminals actually obtain the guns they carry from breaking into people's homes and stealing their firearm. This is an unfortunate reality. When it comes to protecting your gun and preventing it from landing up in the hands of a criminal you need to understand that not all gun safes are created equal.
What you should look for when you are in the market for a gun safe:
Check to see if the gun safe can be bolted down securely. Any thief needs time if they are going to be able to get into the safe and they do not have time when they are in your home. Therefore the majority of them actually remove the safe so that they can transport it elsewhere and work on it in peace. Even if you intend to purchase a heavy gun safe you still need to make sure that it can be bolted down because some thieves are very ingenious and plan ahead, making preparations for moving the safe even if it is a heavy one.
Purchase a gun safe that also comes with automatic alarms. These alarms are designed to go off whenever somebody attempts to break into the safe. If you have purchased one that is bolted to the floor and someone attempts to crack it in your home the alarm will go off and could well convince them to give up before they actually get their hands on the weapon.
Another very important feature that you should look for is that the lock is protected so that there is no chance of a criminal drilling into the lock so as to gain access to the contents of the gun safe. You will find that there are some gun safe manufacturers these days who have found excellent ways of preventing drills from reaching the interior housing for the lock. Whatever method is employed your objective is to choose a safe that has a protected lock.
Choose a gun safe that does not have many welded seams. The more welded seams there are the more opportunity there is for criminals to gain access through these weak points.
Do not choose a gun safe just because it has a heavy and thick door. You want one that is thick all over. Beware of the many on the market that have impressive doors but thin bodies. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that a criminal is simply going to ignore the door and gain access either through the sides or the roof of the safe.
